Fulfill (formerly the FoodBank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties) is a member of the Toms River Family Health and Support Coalition, and a leader of our Nutritious Food Connections subcommittee. Fulfill recognizes there are many causes of hunger and is committed to winning the fight against hunger and food insecurity. Fulfill’s comprehensive approach provides neighbors in need with food for today as well as the tools, resources and knowledge to get back on their feet and provide for themselves tomorrow.
At the Jersey Shore, more than 40,000 children aren’t sure whether they will be able to afford their next meal.
Food security is a year-round issue, but is felt especially around the holidays. According to 2016 data from the USDA’s Economic Research Service there are approximately 16 million households that lack access to enough food at times throughout the year. These households represent approximately 42 million people, including 13 million children and more than 5 million seniors. The need is no different at the Jersey Shore where one in 10, including more than 40,000 children, aren’t sure whether they will be able to afford their next meal. For many, hunger doesn’t take a holiday.
As a dedicated community partner, Fulfill provides nearly 10,000 turkeys during the holiday season, along with fresh produce, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. In November alone, Fulfill distributed enough food for one million nutritious meals and is on track to provide a total of 13 million meals by the end of the year. Its network of programs ensures our neighbors in need around Toms River have quality meals year-round. In addition, Fulfill works to connect families to resources such as mobile food pantries and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) enrollment assistance, which allows households to purchase their own food. Neighbors looking for support can contact Fulfill at anytime or visit the Fulfill website to find a pantry or other program site in their area.
The Toms River Family Health and Support Coalition is working to increase community access to nutritious food connections. The Nutritious Food Connections subcommittee is led by Wendi Silver MS, RD, Network Engagement Team Manager at Fulfill and Gemma Brennan, Adjunct Professor at Georgian Court University.
